A man who was about to take a test drive in a luxury car became furious when the dealership said they needed to check his credit before letting him drive the vehicle.

The story was shared by Keith Ron Powell, a vehicle salesperson at a U.S. dealership. He posted a video on TikTok to recount the incident.

According to him, a customer arrived at the dealership determined to purchase a luxury car. He was driving a Toyota Camry when he arrived but was interested in test driving a $200,000 Bentley.

Powell, however, raised his eyebrows when the man said he only had $1,000 for a down payment and did not intend to pay more than $600 per month in financing.

To verify if the buyer was serious, Powell told him that a credit check was required before proceeding. But the man apparently refused and insisted on taking the car for a test drive first.

The standoff escalated when Powell pointed out the gap between the car the customer was driving and the one he wanted. “With all due respect, you just pulled up in a Toyota Camry,” Powell reportedly told the customer.

“I’d like to know what changed in your life that would make you trade a Toyota Camry for this $200,000 car,” he added.

The man then said his credit score was around 700, which he believed was sufficient. Powell then ran the numbers and found that if he financed the car over five years, the payments would be about $3,400 per month without interest.

So when Powell explained that the $1,000 down payment wouldn’t even make a dent in the car’s total price, the two stared at each other. The man then said he would go to another dealership, but Powell pointed out that no store would let him buy a luxury car under the terms he wanted.

“He had a dream, I have plenty of them,” joked one TikTok user. “He said 5 years, but he meant 50,” said another. “Math is math! These people and the ones ‘waiting for a deal’ expect the world!” commented a third internet user.
